Getting to Dhigurah Island
Dhigurah Island lacks its own airport, necessitating a journey through the capital of the Maldives, Male International Airport (MLE), located approximately 100 kilometers (60 miles) away from Dhigurah.
From Male, several transportation options are available to reach Dhigurah, including speedboats, ferries, seaplanes, or domestic flights to neighboring islands followed by a boat ride to Dhigurah.
Public Speedboat
The primary mode of transportation to Dhigurah is via public speedboats. Departing from Male city and the airport, these boats offer morning and afternoon services daily.
The journey spans approximately 2 hours, with a one-way fare averaging around $50 USD per person. Children above 3 years old are charged full fare.
Boat conditions are generally favorable, featuring comfortable seating, restroom facilities, and ample luggage storage. Complimentary bottled water is provided onboard.
Departures from Male to Dhigurah occur at 11 AM (Friday 10 AM) and 4:30 PM, while return journeys commence from Dhigurah at 6:30 AM and 1:30 PM (Friday 1:45 PM), with a brief stop at Dhangethi island en route to Dhigurah.
However, given the fluctuating schedules of multiple speedboat companies, it’s advisable to verify the timetable with your Dhigurah accommodation prior to departure.
Arrange speedboat bookings through your Dhigurah hotel and conveniently settle payment upon arrival, alleviating the need for carrying excessive cash.
Private Speedboat
For those seeking expedited and direct transfers to Dhigurah from other Maldivian islands, private speedboat charters offer a convenient albeit pricier alternative. Enquire about arrangements through your Dhigurah accommodation.
Domestic Plane
Opting for a 20-minute domestic flight with Villa Air / FlyMe from Male to Maamigili island airport (VAM) presents another viable route to Dhigurah. Subsequent to a brief 5-minute taxi ride to the harbor, embark on a 20-minute speedboat journey to Dhigurah.
Flights operate 3 to 4 times daily, with one-way ticket prices starting from $170 USD for adults and $85 for children under 12 years old, while infants under 2 years old travel free. Typically, the speedboat transfer is inclusive of the flight fare.
In rare instances where turbulent waters impede conventional boat crossings, this flight route may serve as the sole means of reaching Dhigurah.
With various transportation options at your disposal, embarking on your journey to Dhigurah Island becomes an accessible and exhilarating experience, setting the stage for an unforgettable Maldivian adventure.
